This Asthma Level 6 module will teach you how to manage people with asthma in a range of healthcare settings.

It has been developed for healthcare professionals working with adults and children who have asthma – the most common long term condition in the UK, affecting over five million people of all ages.

This module will equip you with the knowledge and skills to develop as an autonomous practitioner providing safe, effective and evidence based care in the field of asthma. You will be able to take a lead in the development of services in both primary and secondary care settings.

Validated by The Open University, this module is delivered by eLearning. Two interactive study days support your learning with a mix of interactive informal lectures and practical sessions delivered by expert practising clinicians. This module can be taken as a standalone course or as part of our BSc Honours Degree in Long Term Conditions.

  • Anatomy and physiology of the respiratory tract
  • Allergy and asthma
  • Viral infections and asthma
  • Diagnosing asthma
  • Medications and delivery devices
  • Asthma management
  • Patient education
  • Public health issues
  • Specific types of asthma: late-onset, hormonal, occupational, brittle, exercise-induced

By the end of the module you will be able to:

  • Analyse the prevalence and causes of asthma
  • Examine the environmental factors in the onset of asthma
  • Identify the link between allergy and asthma
  • Critically assess the effects of asthma on the respiratory tract
  • Select and justify methods for diagnosing asthma in patients of different ages
  • Recommend appropriate treatment strategies to support patients
